Chest Pain

Chest pain or discomfort can have many causes. However, it is important to exclude pain that comes from the heart. This is called angina.

Angina is usually due to narrowing of the coronary arteries that supply blood directly to the heart. Certain risk factors, such as having diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and being a smoker, increase your chances of having angina.

Following a detailed history and physical examination, you will be offered tests such as an ECG and perhaps a treadmill test or an echocardiogram on the day. The results will be discussed with you and any treatment required will be started.

Further tests will then be arranged if needed, and could include a CT angiogram, coronary angiography or a myocardial perfusion scan.

A final decision regarding the diagnosis and treatment will be discussed following the results of the investigations ordered.
